Murter is the largest settlement on the island of the same name. The remains of the ancient settlement of Colentum on the hill Gradina testify to the long history of this place. The first mention of Murter is in the middle of the 13th century under the name Villa Magna, meaning large village. Later, the place was called Srimač, and since the beginning of the 18th century, it has had its current name. Murter has as many as 2700 hours of sunshine a year. The coast is very indented, and the beaches in the village are widely known for their beauty and clear sea. There are also many hidden coves, which are most easily reached by boat. At a distance of ten nautical miles from Murter is the Kornati National Park. Kornati National Park consists of a number of islands and the marine ecosystem around them, which are protected due to cultural and natural features. During the summer, numerous events are held with the aim of introducing visitors to traditional cuisine and the former way of life on the island.
