The Church of out Lady of Planica

This just might be one of the loveliest churches on the island of Vis. You can find it on the road connecting the town of Vis and Komizha (and while you’re travelling in that direction you can make a tour of all the churches situated on this route). Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it is a circular building, reminiscent of a tower. The top of the church is particularly interesting: the roof cornice is made of bricks and tiles and the lantern perched above it looks like a crown.

It is believed this church was built in the 11th century and was dedicated to Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth (which is said to have been the first meeting between Jesus and St. John the Baptist since both the women were pregnant at the time with their respective sons). Inside the church above its Baroque altar there is a painting that depicts this legendary encounter.

The church has been declared a protected cultural heritage and happens to be one of the oldest circular churches in Croatia (along with that of St. Donatus in Zadar).

If you want to visit this church from Komizha it will take you about ten minutes down the road to Vis.
