Kada se govori o nastanku i geografskom položaju Novog Marofa, najčešći su zaključci istraživača kako je to mjesto osnovano sredinom 17. stoljeća, u vrijeme kada je Nikola III. Patačić svojim vojničkim zaslugama obitelji Patačić pribavio nove posjede. U blizini današnjeg grada Novog Marofa, u nekadašnjem Lepinju koji danas kao toponim ne postoji, već je dio današnjeg Podevčeva, obitelj je oko 1666. godine dobila kuriju Novi Maroff. S druge strane postoji stajalište kako je za nastanak Novog Marofa zaslužna druga plemićka obitelj, obitelj Erdödy. Prema tom se tumačenju pretpostavlja da su današnji Novi Marof stvorili posljednji vlasnici Grebengrada koji su sredinom 18. stoljeća izgradili svoj novi „dom“ oko kojeg se počelo razvijati naselje.
