Kalnik is located on the border of Zagorje, Prigorje and Podravina, about 80 km from Zagreb. Here visitors are greeted by a picturesque forest world, educational trail and the remains of two old forts. The smaller of them is located at the top of Mali Kalnik, and the larger on Veliki Kalnik. Kalnik was once even proclaimed a royal palace, during the reign of King Sigismund, whose wife Barbara of Celje, also known in legends as the "Black Queen", often came here. The city was first mentioned in the 13th century and consisted of three parts. The first one was built at the time of the Tatar invasion, when King Bela IV hid in it for some time, with which the legend of the Kalnik “plum growers” is connected. of which he bestowed upon them noble honors.

I visited the two monumental forts in this location and was awed by historical heritage of the location. The one located at the top of Mali Kalnik and the one at Veliki Kalnik. I will visit again with my sister.

The remains of the forts were great looking at, the history behind it was also good knowledge to carry back home. I learnt that it was once property of royalty family and the queen resided here
