Donji Miholjac is located in the heart of the plain, it is a town in Slavonia, on the river Drava, and borders Hungary. Favorable geographical position and natural features such as the proximity of the Drava River, dense forests and such have provided favorable living conditions in the area of Donji Miholjac from the Paleolithic to the present day, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds.Its name comes from St. Michael. In ancient Rome its name was Mariniana. There are several suggested etymologies for the name "Mariniana". One is that it comes from the Roman personal name "Marinus". The second is that it originates from Indo-European root and means "swamp valley".
