Bale

A town with a turbulent past, located in the hinterland of Rovinj, fourteen kilometers towards Pula. Even before the Romans, there was a prehistoric hillfort. Historical documents, remains of Roman buildings, bronze coins and other finds testify to the fact that Bale played the role of a Roman fortress. Bale still remains one of the most beautiful villages located on a hill, at an altitude of 140 meters, in Istria. Old, stone, medieval streets lined with houses from the 14th and 15th centuries meander in a circle around the hill, creating an urban landscape of enviable beauty. The most attractive for tourists are galleries, shops and taverns that give the city a relaxed, artistic atmosphere. They are close to Rovinj, which makes this place suitable for a simple day trip and a refreshing break from the busy coast. Near Bale, in Colone Bay, rich dinosaur fossils have been found that you can study closely at the Ulika Gallery in Bale City Hall.
