When talking about the origin and geographical position of Novi Marof, the most common conclusions of researchers are that this place was founded in the middle of the 17th century, at the time when Nicholas III. With his military merits, Patachich acquired new estates for the Patachich family. Near the present-day town of Novi Marof, in the former Lepinje, which does not exist today as a toponym, but is part of today's Podevchevo, the family received the Novi Maroff manor around 1666. On the other hand, there is a view that another noble family, the Erdody family, was responsible for the creation of Novi Marof. According to this interpretation, it is assumed that today's Novi Marof was created by the last owners of Grebengrad who built their new "home" in the middle of the 18th century, around which the settlement began to develop.
