Kalnik liegt an der Grenze zwischen Zagorje, Prigorje und Podravina, etwa 80 km von Zagreb entfernt. Hier erwartet den Besucher eine malerische Waldwelt, ein Lehrpfad und die Überreste von zwei alten Festungen. Die kleinere der beiden befindet sich auf dem Gipfel des Mali Kalnik, die größere auf dem Veliki Kalnik. Kalnik wurde einst sogar zum Königspalast ernannt, und zwar während der Herrschaft von König Sigismund, dessen Frau Barbara von Celje, die in den Legenden auch als "Schwarze Königin" bezeichnet wird, oft hierher kam. Die Stadt wurde erstmals im 13. Jahrhundert erwähnt und bestand aus drei Teilen.Der erste wurde zur Zeit der Tatareninvasion erbaut, als sich König Bela IV. für einige Zeit darin versteckte, womit die Legende von den Kalniker "Pflaumenzüchtern" verbunden ist, denen er edle Ehren verlieh.

I would recommend this town for nature lovers. The beauty of its forests was so stunning. My kids and I took an a nature walk through its education trail and it was amazing. The forest had different species of flora and fauna.

The landscape of this town was so thrilling.The air was so fresh and relaxing. My stay here was so amazing.I enjoyed visiting The Old Town of Veliki Kalnik. Its ruins are so spectacular.

I visited the two monumental forts in this location and was awed by historical heritage of the location. The one located at the top of Mali Kalnik and the one at Veliki Kalnik. I will visit again with my sister.

Walking through the green luscious vegetation of this location and enjoying the extensive forest and wild life was therapeutic. My wife and I connected with the beautiful nature and explored its extremities.

The village was a good visit indeed. The climb to the top of the hill and back was great, walking inside the trees and cool breeze was amazing. The view of the thick forest was amazing

The remains of the forts were great looking at, the history behind it was also good knowledge to carry back home. I learnt that it was once property of royalty family and the queen resided here
