City of Korcula

Korchula is a beautiful fortified town on the east coast of the island of the same name, which boasts a rich history. Namely, the Statute of the town and the island of Korchula from 1214 is the oldest legal document in Croatia and among the oldest Slavic in general.The old town is surrounded by magnificent walls, and the streets are arranged in the shape of a fishbone, allowing free air flow, but also protecting it from strong winds.The town of Korčula is planned so that there are west and east sides of the town. On these two sides the island is divided by a main street that runs right through the center of the island. It was primarily built so that there would be an excellent defense against various attacks. Looking at the city from a bird’s eye view, people agree that it irresistibly resembles a fishbone. The city plan, many will say, precisely because it is as it is, provides almost ideal living conditions for all its inhabitants.
