In the Middle Ages, Koprivnica was named after the stinging nettle plant – kopriva. In 1356 Koprivnica became a free royal city. During the 20th century, and especially in the last forty years, Koprivnica grew into a modern city that in 1993 became the center of Koprivnica-Krizhevci County. Today it is a city with the patina of a Central European old town to which have been added Renaissance, Baroque squares, Art Nouveau buildings and spacious modern quarters with more than 30,000 inhabitants. Thanks to the Croatian food giant Podravka, drug factory Belupo and brewery Carlsberg, Koprivnica holds the title of the city of famous Croatian and world brands. With its carefully arranged communal infrastructure, numerous events throughout the year, new hospital facilities, city swimming pools, arranged bicycle paths, Koprivnica is increasingly becoming a Central European city tailored to man. Rich cultural heritage and interesting natural resources in the area create potential for the city to become one of the most desirable tourist destinations in Croatia.
