This magnificent theater developed from the first city theater built in 1836 located in today's Old Town Hall. The theater was first established as the Croatian National Theater in 1860, and in 1861 received state support putting it on par with many other European In 1870, an opera troupe was added to the theater, which in 1895 moved to a new purpose-built building on Trg Republike Hrvatske in Zagreb's Donji Grad, where it still stands proudly today.
At the entrance to the theater there is a wall fountain called the Source of Life (Well of Life), designed in 1905 by the Croatian artist and sculptor Ivan Meshtrovich. The Opera of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb is the most important theater institution in the country, which in various rhythms and volumes from the very beginning of its activities until today represents a diverse repertoire of the highest artistic achievements.
