Djakovo is a town in the region of Slavonia and is the center of a fertile and rich region. Administratively, it belongs to Osijek-Baranja County. The city bears the title "Heart of Slavonia".The first written record of the name Djakovo dates from 1239 in a document signed by Bela IV. King of Hungary and Croatia, giving the estates of Djakovo and Brezno to Bishop Ponsi. According to some research, this area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic, and the Roman settlement of Certissia was built in that area.Numerous archeological sites are located in the city and its surroundings. They make up the rich history of this city. Excavations from 1997 confirm life in the wider area of the city as early as the Neolithic, around 5500 BC, which through a long and turbulent history lasts to the present day.
