Lovran is a small town in Istria with a tradition of tourism more than a hundred years old. It is named after the laurel, which grows in this area in abundance. On the site of today's Lovran, there was a Roman Villa Rusticae in the 1st century BC. This is considered as the beginning of the settlement, although this area was probably inhabited before. The medieval urban structure of Lovran has been preserved to this day. The city was surrounded by a wall and bastions, and houses were later built on their foundations. Thanks to the good climate, lush Mediterranean vegetation, and good geographical position, tourism in Lovran experienced a strong development as early as the end of the 19th century. Along with Opatija, Lovran was then the most important place on the famous Riviera. This period of history is evidenced by the magnificent hundred-year-old villas, which are truly valuable examples of architectural heritage. Today, Lovran is a modern tourist town rich in history, culture and beautiful nature.
