State Archives

In Pazin, as the crown of a long struggle for the right to education in the mother tongue, in 1899 the Imperial-Royal Great State Gymnasium was opened, the first high school institution of Istrian Croats. This event was a major and significant success in the fight to preserve the national identity of the Croatian population in Istria. The Imperial-Royal Great State Gymnasium operated until 1919, and after the Second World War its tradition was continued by the Juraj Dobrila Gymnasium and Vocational School.

Today, the building of the Old Pazin Gymnasium houses the State Archives of Pazin, which is one of the richest archives in Croatia in terms of archives, and according to notarial records it is ahead of some of the world's great archives.
