Papuk Nature Park covers most of Papuk, as well as part of Krndija, in the general direction northwest - southeast. The Paleozoic core, built of gneiss, is covered at the edges with Cretaceous (limestone and dolomite) and Tertiary (marl) deposits. Papuk is characterized by a great forest wealth, in which beech and oak predominate, in addition to maple, field maple and ash. There are birches, pines and chestnuts on the sunny sides. There are bare rocks only in the lower parts and streambeds. Stijene Sokoline (564 m) not far from Gornji Vrhovac are unusual for the Slavonian mountains, and in some places they are bare, smooth and almost vertical.
