The establishment of the museum in Bjelovar, an "institution of memory" that collects, preserves, processes, interprets and presents to the public the most significant and precious memories from the past of the inhabitants of Bjelovar and its surroundings, was preceded by several private collections. The initiative for the establishment of the Bjelovar City Museum was initiated in 1946 on behalf of the then House of Culture by teacher Rade Kovach, later one of its first directors. It is permanently located in a one-story building of the old city government, built in 1832 in today's historic city center, which has the status of a cultural property of the first category.
