Biokovo - a mountain with roots in the sea, and peaks in the clouds. Biokovo Mountain Nature Park rises steeply above the Makarska Riviera and is popular among mountaineers and hikers. The lower slopes provide many trails and trails through olive groves, vineyards and pine forests, before stretching high into the limestone mountain. Declared a Nature Park in 1981, it covers about 195 square kilometers and offers fantastic views of the sea and remote islands from the peaks. In addition to an excellent promenade, the Biokovo Mountain Nature Park has over 1500 plant and animal species. In addition to the proud heights, the mountain also has surprising depths. More than 400 pits and caves have been discovered. Some of them are forever filled with snow and ice, resisting even the warmest sun. The botanical garden above the village of Kotišina is partly located inside the Park. The highest peak in the Biokovo Mountain Nature Park is called Sveti Jure (Sveti Juraj), 1762 m high. A popular starting point for walking along Sveti Jure is from the village of Velika Brda, which offers a spectacular hiking route. An alternative route is to walk to the top of Voshac, and then follow the path to the top of Sveti Jure. The top of Sveti Jure is very recognizable with a TV tower and a telecommunication tower, together with the chapel of Sveti Jure. Surprisingly, it is possible to reach the top of Sveti Jure, and it is only 31 km away from Makarska.
