Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of 16 beautiful lakes in untouched nature and has been on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List since 1979. Therefore, it is not surprising that they are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Croatia, and annually have more than a million visitors from around the world.

Plitvice Lakes consist of 16 cascading tufa lakes and numerous waterfalls. Tufa is a porous type of rock formed by the deposition of dissolved calcium carbonate by plants such as algae and moss. Over time, tufa barriers dammed the river valley, creating lakes. Due to these processes, unique ecology and exceptional beauty, Plitvice Lakes have been included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.

There are two entrances to the Park: Entrance 1 (Rastovaca) and Entrance 2 (Hladovina). Each of the entrances is the start of four lake tour programs. At Entrance 1, trails A, B, C and K begin, which are marked with green markings. At Entrance 2, trails E, F, H and K start. Trails are of different durations from 2 up to 8 hours, depending on your wishes and physical shape. The park offers a web application with all tour programs. Although the Park is open all year round, some of the trails are not open during the colder part of the year, so be sure to check before leaving.

In addition to walking, the Park can be visited by boat on Lake Kozjak or by tourist train.

Further in the text, find out which places in the Park you should not miss to visit and where you can take a break with great food and drinks.
