The beautiful temple of Neptune was built at the main Porech forum in the ancient 1st century and still stands as the largest in Istria, although only part of the wall and foundations have been preserved.
In ancient times, Porech, like all Roman cities, had a forum, the main town square which is today called Marafor, and the temple oriented towards the forum had the role of a capitol temple. The temple was thought to have been dedicated to the god Mars because of the interpretation of the name Marafor as the Martis Forum, the Mars Forum. To the northwest, also in the immediate vicinity of the former forum, are the remains of the Great Temple, dedicated to the sea god Neptune.
