Otochki Virovi has been declared a protected area of Vukovar-Srijem County. The area includes the river Virovi and the surrounding pedunculate oak forest. Virovi is a natural phenomenon. Due to the almost untouched nature, Otochki Virovi has preserved autochthonous bird species that ornithologists find only in the area of this unusual watercourse. It is similar with fish that are only found in this forest stream. During heavy rainfall in spring and autumn, the water level rises significantly. Then the Virovi establish a natural flowing connection with the river Spačva, and through it with Bosut and Sava, behaving like a slow-flowing river. Thus, from the natural phenomenon of the source - "vir", the name Virovi probably arose.
