Legend has it that the Monastery of St. Michael above Lim was founded at the beginning of the 11th century by St. Romuald, who had previously lived as a hermit in a cave in the Lim Channel. From the once very powerful and influential abbey, only ruins remain today. In the church of St. Michael the remains of Romanesque frescoes, the oldest frescoes in Istria, have been preserved. The frescoes can be dated to the first half of the 11th century and are probably the best-preserved frescoes in Europe created as part of South German monumental painting circle.
