Maksimir Park is the largest masterpiece of garden architecture in Croatia, and one of the oldest in Europe, opened in the 18th century. Preserving its centuries-old oak forests to this day, it is an excellent place to escape from the urban way of life. the park consists of beautiful meadows, lakes and streams.
The English-style park is also home to more than 100 species of birds, especially birds that nest in holes. The most significant is the spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), a European endangered species.
Inside the park you can visit the new villa of Bishop Haulik, the Echo pavilion (also known as the Temple of Lanterns), a gazebo, a Swiss house, the chapel of St. George, an obelisk and numerous sculptures from all periods of the park's history.
Within the park there is also the Zagreb Zoo. It is located in the southern part of Maksimir Park. Next to the park you can find the unfinished FC Dinamo stadium.
