Today's door of St. Mikules that are visible are actually the remains of the former strong walls that formed the defensive part of the town of Cres. Namely, the walls together with the gates were erected in the 16th century, but they were demolished after the arrival of the Austrian authorities. The gate, which has retained its original appearance, together with the city tower, are today the only preserved remains of walls from the time of Venetian rule. They are built of stone and are one of the most visited historical sights of the city and the island.
