The Istrian desert is located near Shterna and is often called the Shterna desert. The place belongs to the municipality of Grozhnjan, and once the area was large and contained many settlements.
The Istrian desert may be small in area, but it is still large enough that you can get lost in it for a while and pretend to be in an exotic location or on another planet. The desert consists of marl dunes, which are not uncommon in Croatia. Marl is a gray or yellowish fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of calcite and clay. In Istria, we often encounter this type of environment, so these dunes are not a unique phenomenon. But the desert is special in that it stretches over a fairly large area than is otherwise the case.
