A walk through Opatija would not be complete if you bypassed the numerous city sculptures. The most famous statues are the statue of Miroslav Krzela, the statue of Isadora Duncan, the statue of Jan Kubelik and the statue of the Girl with the Seagull. Above the popular city beach Slatina, right on the coastal promenade Lungomare, you will see a statue of Miroslav Krleža, the most important Croatian writer and intellectual of the 20th century. Miroslav Krleza (1893-1981) was a prominent figure in the cultural life of both Yugoslav states, the Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom. He was born in Zagreb. He was a novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, cultural critic and essayist.
