Lonjsko Polje Nature Park

The largest nature park in Central Croatia is Lonjsko polje, located in the valley of the Sava River, east of Zagreb. Covering an area of 506 km2, it is one of the largest preserved European wetlands, protected by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of world importance. The park provides an atmosphere of peace and quiet typical of wide wetlands. With calm waters covered with water lilies, there are cult oak forests, especially beautiful at dusk. But by far the greatest wealth of Lonjsko polje is in its 250 species of birds. These include many small birds and different species of ducks. The most famous inhabitants of the park are storks, which usually build their nests on the roofs of lovely wooden country houses. One of such villages is Chigoch, in 1994 declared the first European stork village. Needless to say, the waters of Lonjsko polje attract other creatures such as snakes, but it should be noted that there are fewer venomous snakes here than in the rocky south of Croatia.
