Trsat, was first heard of far back in 799. It is an ideal place for a walk, coffee and sightseeing. First of all, the Trsat castle, which dates back to prehistory was just an observatory then. For its present appearance we can be grateful to its last owner, Count Laval Nugent, who bought it in the first half of the 19th century and restored it as a family mausoleum. In the immediate vicinity is the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, one of the oldest in Croatia, Pope John Paul II visited it in June 2003.

I visited the Trsat castle and found it a very informative and interesting place to visit, with many things to do and see. I enjoyed exploring the beautiful gardens, the park, and the nature trail, having a drink at the wine bar, listening to music at the music venue, and eating at a cafe. I also liked going on the elevator down to the harbor where I had an opportunity to take in the fresh breeze off of the sea.

The castle is maintained, with a beautiful view of the whole city.
