The architecture of this fort is quite curious: its shape is irregular because it was built to emulate the shape of the gorge it was built on. It was most probably erected during the reign of the Croatian prince Trpimir, between 845 and 865 AD. This estimate was made by its decorative stone pillar with an early medieval plait, which has been dated to the 9th century. The fortress was built in a layered structure, with the visible ones dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Earlier layers tell us that it was built on the remains of a prehistoric Illyrian building. Topana was able to accommodate up to five hundred people. It was equipped with a platform for cannons, in Croatian “topana”, which is how it got its name.
