The free-standing circular tower in the center of Veli Loshinj was built in the 15th century, in the first decades of Venetian rule over the eastern Adriatic coast. With its thick walls, small openings and relatively low, it resisted cannon fire from enemy ships for centuries and protected the population of Veli Loshinj from pirate raids. newly established municipalities of Veli Loshinj. After two centuries of decay, it was thoroughly renovated in the period from 1997 to 2000, when it received new mezzanine wooden structures, wooden staircases and a roof, as well as a new, museum-gallery purpose. With the opening of the Kula Museum and Gallery in 2001, this valuable cultural monument has once again become a significant part of the life of Veli Loshinj.
