In the westernmost part of Kalnik, on a wooded hill, are the remains of the Old Town of Paka. The fort is located east of town Paka, above the stream. It dates from the 13th century when a military unit was stationed there that patrolled the area to protect the population. In recent years, the museum from Varaždin has been conducting investigative works, and they have organized a partial tidy-up - the restoration of the fortress walls.
Several legends and stories are connected with Paka, which some locals of this small town still tell today. The old name of this hilly area, Crna Paka (Black Paka), is almost forgotten, and is associated with memories of bandits ambushing passengers on a narrow and hilly road in the dark. The locals still use this narrow passage, and it is known as Tijesna Paka (Narrow Paka).
The legend of the Roman town of Gradishche tells of a beautiful girl who is enchanted into a snake that carries the golden key of the city in its mouth and waits for a young miller to save her from a bad fate in a full moon.
