On March 27, 1891, there was a boat with two people on a trip in the sea in front of Opatija. These are the German Count Arthur Kesselstadt and Countess Anne Fries. A strong storm interrupted this romantic trip, they both fell into the sea and drowned. To commemorate this accident, the Kesselstadt family had a stone statue of the Madonna placed on a rock in the sea on behalf of all the loving couples who ended tragically.
