One of the most famous sights of the island of Vir is the Venetian fortress Kashtelina, which is located in an area called Kozjak. This fortification was apparently built in the early 17th century. The Venetian authorities built it in order to protect the population of the Nin region and Vir from the Uskoks and attacks of the Turks, who at that time were invading this area. Part of that fortification has been preserved to this day. On the façade of Kaštelina are preserved the coats of arms of the Venetian families of the general providors for Dalmatia, who ruled this area at that time. On the north tower is a partially damaged winged lion, a symbol of the Republic of Venice. Reconstruction of this fort was carried out in the period from May 2001 to April 2002
