Fortress of St. Nicholas

Renaissance Fortress of St. Nicholas is a unique building of the Venetian fortification system, located at the entrance to the Channel of St. Anthony in front of Shibenik. The fortress had the role of protecting Shibenik as an important Venetian port from the Ottomans. Construction began in 1540 according to the project of architect Gian Girolamo Sanmichelli. The value of the fortress is in the preservation of the original Renaissance form, and since 2017 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fortress can be visited only by boat organized by the Public Institution Nature of Shibenik-Knin County. The ship departs from the Shibenik waterfront. The visit to the fortress lasts about 2 hours and includes a boat ride and a tour of the fortress with audiovisual guides with headphones.
