They are smaller in size than the medieval city gates and therefore we call them the Small City Gates. They were built in the second half of the 12th or early 13th century in a lavish Romanesque style. The frame around the neck consists of thirteen magnificent and solid stone blocks. Over the centuries, doors have been part of the system city walls, and only the two-winged ones made of hard Istrian oak have been preserved.
Today, the door contains a fragment of the city walls and a plaque with a shallow relief of a lion. Two cannon iron balls were built into the walls around the door of English ships from the 19th century which destroyed the Istrian towns, then under the leadership of Napoleon.
