Popovaca is a city with a long history. The first traces of human life in this area date back to prehistory. In Roman times, the proximity of ancient Siscia (today's Sisak) contributed to the development of this area, so along the road between Sisak and Variannis (Kutina) is a large complex of a Roman villa. Numerous fortifications in the area testify to the period of the Middle Ages, and Popovaca developed alongside them. Popovaca gained considerable momentum in the modern era in 1897 with the arrival of the railway. Today, Popovača is interesting to visitors because of its numerous wineries and vineyards, hiking and mountaineering trails, and surrounding fortifications.
