Kaldir is located on a hill five kilometers southeast of Motovun. The hill was probably inhabited in prehistoric times, and the settlement was first mentioned in 1258. It fell under the administration of Motovun, so it shared its entire history with the city on the neighboring hill, which in 1276 came under the supremacy of Venice, under which everything was until its fall in 1797. The parish of Kaldir was founded in 1550. most probably for the population arrived in those years from the Croatian areas occupied by the Turks.

Today, Kaldir is the most famous place in Istria when it comes to fruit growing. Various varieties of fruit are grown there, more precisely more than 60 percent of the fruit that is distributed in Istria comes from Kaldir.
