Borut is today a common name for several smaller hamlets north of Cerovlje in Istria. Thanks to the deposited natural clay along the Borutski stream, brick production has been nurtured there for centuries. The clay used to be dug and shaped by hand, and baked in field kilns which are popularly called "frnazhe". Since 1904, this tradition has been industrialized, but today production, due to lack of raw materials, is turned to other products.Borut is also the starting point for two marked circular hiking trails: the St. Kocijan Trail and the St. Sylvester Trail. Both trails are marked with Istria trails and green-yellow mountaineering markings and start at the Borut railway station.
