The Church of Saint Mark

Built in 1514 this church is a lovely example of the Romanesque architectural style. The location it stands on is even more interesting: it was built over the remains of a basilica built in the 5th century AD. In the very same place the remains of a Christian baptistery were also found, side by side with the remains of a mosaic floor dating back to Roman times.

This rich archaeological site gives evidence of a busy and densely populated area. The church itself is not used for religious services, but instead serves a museum and a gallery of sacred art.
