Solin Channel

Solin Channel is one of the most visited places in the Mljet National Park.

It connects the open sea with the Great Lake. There is a dam in the canal, made to prevent the passage of alluvium and driftwood into the Great Lake, but it does not interfere with the passage through the canal. Its entrance, also known as the Gates of Solin (Vrata od Solina), is adorned with a stone cross placed there by Benedictine monks.

As it is located next to the open sea, the canal is exposed to northern wind bura and the southern wind jugo, both of which which will be quite strong in this location. The rest of the canal, however, is rather well protected from winds.
