This museum is a must-see, even for those who are not necessarily interested in archaeology or history. Located on the coast of the town of Vis, in the Batarija Fort, it is a home to numerous artefacts from the Hellenistic period (the largest Hellenistic collection in Croatia) as well as local pottery and various costumes and tools used in fishing by the people of Vis throughout history.

The star of the museum, however, is the display of the amphoras found during excavations in the Vela Svitnja Bay. 643 amphoras were found on this location, a lot of them virtually intact and in mint condition, with their lids still on them. Artefacts of this kind are usually displayed individually, in order to showcase their features, but in this museum you will find them displayed exactly as they were placed below deck of the ship that carried them, which makes for quite a stunning view.

The fort where the museum is situated is an interesting piece of the island’s history, too, built in the 19th century by the Austrians. At the moment, the museum is open from 9 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm daily, except for Saturdays when the working hours are between 9 am and 1 pm, and Sundays, when the museum is closed. The admission fee is 20 kn for adults and 10 kn for children. This affordable price is certainly worth paying to see the beauty and richness of ancient history on beautiful display.
