Vela draga has been protected by law since 1963 as a 'natural landscape reserve', and since 1998 as a geomorphological natural monument. The trail passes along the edge of the impressive canyon of the same name and, with the help of installed interpretation boards, represents this monument of geomorphological value. The plaques explain the geological phenomenon of the origin of the Učka massif and the Vela draga canyon.

Above the canyon, on the landscaped lookout, you can take a break and watch the towers rising from the canyon. The trail teaches mountaineering and free climbing, sports that have been present in Vela draga since 1931, when the legendary alpinist Emilio Comici climbed the first alpine route in a large tower.
