Church of St. Gaetan is located in the old town of Cres, near the town market. Saint Gaetano Errico was an Italian priest born in the late 18th century in Naples. At the age of 16, he went to the seminary where he was educated at the archbishop's seminary in his hometown. In 1815 he was ordained a priest, while in 1819 he began working as a teacher in a local school. He took care of the sick and prisoners, and lived very modestly. After the apparition of St. Altronz, he built the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and founded the Society of Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, whose missionaries still work today in Asia, Africa, Europe and America. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 2002, and Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in 2008.
