The island of Brach has been famous for its stonemasonry since the ancient times. The quality of the stone and the skill of the island’s stonemasons impressed the Emperor Diocletian who ordered it for the building of his palace in Split. The stone blocks for this palace came from the quarry Rashoe located in Splitska (named after the town of Split where the quarry’s stones were sent to). Today, this quarry is under the watchful eye of Hercules, one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology - or rather, his relief, carved in stone by the quarry workers over a thousand years ago. The hiking trail leading from (and to) the quarry is aptly named Hercules. It might be interesting to note that the gorgeous stone of the island of Brach was used to build the White House in Washington, the Parliament in Vienna and the Parliament in Budapest.
