Neretva river runs through Bosnia and Herzegovina and meets the sea in Croatia, near the town of Ploče. This area, or its delta, is a wetland with over three hundred bird species, and as such is the second largest ornithological area in Europe. The delta is perhaps better known for its tangerine plantations, considered the best in Croatia, where this fruit grows in fertile soil and under perfect Mediterranean sunshine. During Roman times this area was a part of the trading route connecting the city of Narona (located at the site near the modern-day town of Metković) with other towns and settlements on the Adriatic coast. Nowadays, aside from bird-watching and hiking in the unique scenery of sandy river beaches that extend for hundreds of yards towards the sea, the delta of this river is a great place for cycling and kite-surfing. You won't need to go kayaking or cycling to have a great experience of this beautiful landscape. While the delta is a great place for an active holiday, its sandy beaches and strands, bordered with tall grass and wild flowers, surrounded by pine tree woods, and a sea that remains shallow for hundreds of meters, will make for a different kind of a beach experience, one that you simply cannot miss.
