At the end of the promenade in the park of Ivan Mažuranić formed in early 1904, there are the remains of the ancient fortress Lopar, which was built in the 3rd or 4th century AD, and served as protection of traffic on the Roman road from Tarsatica to Senia.
Furthermore, fragments of old Roman vases made of clay and glass, as well as Roman money, were found in the area between the fortress and the outer walls, and amphorae from the 1st to the 5th century BC were discovered in the sea area between the coast and the islet of San Marino.
The Lopar fortress was destroyed in 1598 during the Venetian attack on Nova by the providor (supreme commander of the Venetian navy) Ivan (Zuana) Bemba.
