Another fort built as a part of the Austro-Hungarian defece system in Istria, Fort Untertritt was built entirely below ground level. It was intended to serve as barracks and could accommodate up to five hundred infantry soldiers. This fort differs from the others in the defence district of Barbariga: it was built on two levels and it’s structure is unique and specific to the German type of fortification building. The fort remains in relatively good condition and while it’s not open to public you can explore its outdoor structure free of charge.
