The construction of the City Fortress began after 1278, when Hvar came under the rule of Venice. The fortress with city walls forms a unique defense system. In 1551 a new fortress was built on the site of the old one, and in 1571 during the Turkish invasion In 1579, the fortress was significantly damaged in an explosion of a powder magazine, which was caused by a lightning strike, and was not repaired until the beginning of the 17th century during the reign of Prince Pietro Semitecol, with the construction of Baroque defensive bastions.
