Stone houses from the 19th-20th centuries cannot be found everywhere, they are in some unusual, yet undetermined regularity, scattered across the Adriatic landscape. Hive houses served as shelters for farmers in the field from the sudden bad weather, very important at the time when medical care was neither developed nor readily available. Many were built during the wine fever in the 19th century, when the phylloxera pest destroyed French and Italian vineyards but spared Dalmatia for several more years. In the European market, wine became very valuable and expensive, which allowed the vineyard owners to get rich after just a few harvests, so the ripe grapes had to be cared for all day and night.
Stone houses have many different names (kazuni, komarde, chemeri, pudarice, poljarice, trimi, torete ...), but they all have a unique structural solution of the arch of the corpus and are built entirely of stone (without any mortar) and without a wooden roof structure , which makes them a valuable part of the cultural heritage
