The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most valuable architectural monuments of the past and is rightly considered the most famous monument of religion and culture in the city of Senj. It is believed that the church was built around 1000, because during the restoration of the bell tower, it was found inscribed on that year, so it was assumed that both the bell tower and the church itself were built at the turn of the century. The construction was completed in 1169 as a single-nave Romanesque basilica on the foundations of the pagan sanctuary Magnae mater, and then a Paleo-Christian building from the 4th - 5th century.
