The Church of Saint Cyprian and Justine

This beautiful stone church stands in between the charming stone houses in the neighbourhood of Kut in the city of Vis. It was built in 1754, in the location of a 15th century Gothic church, parts of which have been incorporated into the St. Cyprian and Justine church as it stands today.

This church was built mostly due to the efforts of the affluent Fioretti brothers. No doubt their funding provided, at least in part, for the lavishly decorated bell tower, three altars and a number of artwork that can be found in the church even now. Above the main altar (the only one of the three still in use) there is a painting depicting St. Cyprian, Justine, St. Nicholas and Anthony of Padua. The church records tell us that in 1763 the church had its own organ, which had to be removed due to being completely worn down.

The front of the church is facing south and overlooking a small square and a large stone staircase leading up to it, all a part of one unified architectural concept.

The church is also the resting place of the writer Aleksandar Gazarovich, who died in 1706 and was the grandson of the famous Croatian author Marko Marulich.
